Having tried the new river walk on foot we decided to give it a go on horses this morning.  I took Scarlett and Clive took Leo. It is often difficult for horses to do a route they are not familiar with, so we took them up into the mountains first, to cover some familiar ground , finishing off on the new part along the river. To be honest, most of the route once we got high into the mountains was totally new to Scarlett, but she took it all in her stride. It was a very warm sunny morning for late December, and with their thick winter coats they were getting quite sweaty so we took a few opportunities to let them stop and eat grass to cool off. (there is also a restaurant half way round, ideal for a beer and tapas!) .

arriving at the restaurant for a well earned rest, drink and tapas

The ride including beer stop took about 2 1/2 hours, 14 kilometres in total, a nice length for spring and autumn and with a longer stop for something to eat it could easily be a 3 hour ride. (there are some nice spots for picnics too :) )A lot of the river part of the route is in the shade so would be good for the summer too.   We were very proud of how the horses accepted being asked to take lots of new twists and turns, especially as some of the ground was a bit soft under foot, with some narrow paths and low branches to contend with.  The beauty of this new river trail is that it also opens up lots of new options for different shorter rides too, linking trails we already do. We will now have to try some of the other horses :) .

We have a very exciting new route for riding and walking, following the river from the Los Cien Caños water pipes all the way to the village and beyond.  It is a new initiative created by the Junta de Andalucia, to provide a clear and marked walkway that goes all the way to Malaga!   We can enjoy our local part of the route, with a beautiful scenic trail for guests to use to walk to the village  (it takes an hour) or the water pipes and for us to ride the horses along , opening up new routes , joining old routes, giving us lots of possibilities for even more interesting rides. At the end of the route  to the village is a restaurant which is perfect for stopping for a drink with the horses before carrying on home through the mountains

Who says you can’t teach an old horse new tricks.

If you have had a chance to read about the horses, you may have read ‘Capri’s story’. https://horseriding-holidays-andalucia.com/our-horses/capriochosa-capri/
As explained in her story , she was the start of our bitless and barefoot journey and thanks to her, we have changed the lives of the rescue horses we have taken on over the years and of course our horses born here have never had a bit in their mouth or shoes on their feet, or felt a whip on their skin.
When guests first ride with us , we take time at the start to explain how we ride, with loose reins (a smile in the rein), relaxed, with only the lightest touch. Less really is more, and our horses will work happily for you with the slightest encouragement – if you try to bully them by kicking or pulling they will not understand and may be confused.
Guests often comment that our horses are so calm and don’t react to situations that may have made their own horse run across a field. I explain that when you have loose reins and are relaxed, the horse is also relaxed, meaning that if you see something up ahead that you think might make your horse nervous, and maybe you tense up, with traditianal tight reins and bit, your nervousness is transmitted to the horse down the rein, but with loose ,relaxed reins this doesnt happen.
Sometimes guests are a bit sceptical but once they have tried it they often want to start riding bitless at home.
There is an ever growing following now for bitless riding, all over the world, and it is great that we can offer riders who are already on the bitless journey , the chance to enjoy a holiday without going against their principles. If you do ride with a bit at home though, don’t worry, it is really easy to adjust your riding style while you are here and enjoy some happy hacking :) .
You can even try riding in just a neck rope (cordeo) , we are happy to show you how.

We love to cater for Vegans and Vegetarians here at Cortijo Los Lobos.   We work hard to serve interesting, freshly cooked meals to cater for all tastes.  We also realise that some Vegans do not agree with riding horses, so why not take a horse for a walk or do some liberty work in the arena?  Our horses always appreciate the attention.

Food is our passion. We love preparing home cooked, healthy meals from fresh ingredients, locally and organically sourced where possible . We are lucky to have freshly laid eggs from our own hens and seasonal fruits from our garden depending on the time of year. Of course we also have our delicious organic olive oil for guests to enjoy.  We are happy to cater for any dietary requirements, whether you are gluten intolerant, meat eaters, vegetarian or vegan , we really enjoy creating interesting meals to tantalise your taste buds.

Three course evening meals are typically served in one of the shady courtyards or in the beautiful farmhouse dining room it it is not warm enough to eat outside ( in the winter months you can also enjoy the ambience of our gorgeous open fire. )

Before guests arrive we always check what food you like and dislike so that we can be sure of serving you meals you will enjoy.

If you are staying with us on a full board basis you may well be eating with other guests, which always leads to a sociable and enjoyable evening.  (Clive’s paella night is a firm favourite! ) If you are self catering and perhaps would like a meal one night, you can either join in with the dinner party or maybe you prefer us to serve you a private meal, we are very flexible . We also love to cater for special occasions, so if you have a birthday or other celebration, don’t forget to tell us !

Our meals aren’t always confined to the Farm , we also love to prepare sumptuous home cooked picnic fare to enjoy on the mountain side , on our picnic rides, with non riders very welcome to attend too , catching a ride with Clive in the Landrover.  What better way to enjoy the special late evening or early morning light.
